I have had the experience of wonderful lectors — but they are few and far between and really stand out in my mind.
Let’s accept that it is laudable that the lectors come from the congregation. Don’t you think it is hokey that they walk up from pew number 7 or 8 or 9? Everyone knows the lectors are not religious clergy. We recognize them by name. They don’t have to be seated in the pews to be part of the congregation.
How come it never dawned on you that immediately after the first reading, when the lector takes his or her seat, no one, and I do mean NO ONE is thinking about what was just read. Instead, everyone is guessing and looking around to see who will be the next person to stand up. Will it be a man or a woman? Old or young? Someone sitting with family or all alone? What will he or she be wearing?
If you ask anyone in your congregation, they will tell you they are thinking the same questions, because that lector is not visible up on the altar. It causes a guessing game.
