Dear Jennifer,
Most people my age (43) who have practiced the Catholic faith have been in your shoes. As I rule of thumb, I find those who are married with small children tend to stay actively engaged in the Church. Those who are single or married without children tend, but not always, to feel dry about religion -- not just the Catholic Church but all religion.
Thus, it is interesting to me that you find the Protestant service interesting but the Catholic Mass does not leave you feeling satisfied. I would not change religions because one minister delivered better sermons than another. We have a wonderful, young female Presbyterian minister in my town, but I don't believe 50% of what Presbyterians take as their creed, so I could not join that church.
I know how lots of people have found faith, but it always leads them to the Catholic Church in the examples and people I have studied. So I have a proposal for you.
Why don't you take the following online quiz to see what religion suits you best? It is located at http://www.beliefnet.com/story/76/story_7665_1.html
You need to take the results with a grain of salt, because it said I fit in with "Mainline Protestant" churches better than the Roman Catholic Church. However, when I took a related quiz from that same site on "What kind of Catholic Are You?" then amazingly it exactly and precisely characterized me as a "Liberal Catholic," although I prefer the term "Catholic Liberal." The latter quiz correctly predicted some of my favorite songs in church, my favorite pope from the last century, and a number of interesting things about my faith that I knew deep down inside.
If you will take that quiz and report back your results, then I think I can help you rekindle your faith, because it will tell us what you find most important and need from religious faith.
Michael
