Hi Mike ...
First of all - you are some unconventional guy! I don't know too many people who would take a part time job at a restaurant as a way to meet people. But you seem to be enjoying the people and environment. Good for you.
As for those people who seem "selfish" and uncaring about *the bigger questions*, I understand your frustration. I work with VERY wealthy people who can't even spend all the money they have coming in every month, take exotic trips everywhere, etc. etc. Talk about a bunch of people who appear to care very little about the bigger questions. Even though they have more money than they know what to do with, they can be every bit as greedy and selfish as your waittress. Real need seems to have little to do with the impulse to hoard.
Like you, I try not to judge them and to be compassionate (sometimes I'm not too successful).
Rich or poor, "spiritual" or not, it seems that we all have this woundedness about us. The challenge, I think, is to respond to them as compassionately as I can. Somehow, I think that my own healing lies therein.
It helps too, I think, to have a place where you can rant your frustrations without feeling guilty about it.
