“The Catholic Church often follows society when it comes to moral norms. Take slavery or equal treatment of women, and so many other issues. I think the reason for this is that the Bishops are lapse to consider real moral situations that make a difference in peoples lives. They are slow to listen carefully enough to all the authoritative opinions on issues, therefore, they are embarrassingly slow when it comes to the current moral issues of any decade.”
Rome and the bishops have more important things to worry about, such as whether or not prayers are translated literally from Latin. Don’t worry about MEANING, just be literal, so after years and years of work by those who have no expertise in liturgy but a lot of angst about corrupting influences such as using language that acknowledges that women are part of the human race too, we now get to go back to the version of the mass I first knew shortly after Vatican II and can say “And with your spirit” instead of “And also with you.” This is so important, after all. And by worrying about the language wars, there is no time left to deeply reflect on issues such as the two thousand years of misognist thinking that underlies much church teaching (and prayers in the liturgy). During the creed I still say “..for us and our salavation”, even though the priests have been “ordered” to include the word “man”. I am not a man but suspect that Jesus meant for me to be included in the plan for salvation.
But, I guess we should all be patient, in a few hundred years…..
Peace
