35. Please comment on this course's strengths and weaknesses:
-- Course was very difficult in such a short time. This course would be better in a two term format where the difficult topics could be explored in a more defined way for easier understanding.
-- Course weakness: there is not enough explaination to actually teach you the course material. If you haven''t had actual financial training then this course is over your head. There is not enough basic training.
-- Far too much material. If the instructor didn''t cut it down to make it manageable, a lot more students would have failed or dropped out of the course.
-- I would have liked the text to bring the information presented to a useful, real-life conclusion; it seemed that the text left loose ends by not showing how some of the ideas presented can actually be used. The answers to test questions were not readily found in the chapters. Finally, studying two chapters per week is not a realistic requirement. The information is too detailed and difficult to completely digest 16 chapters in 8 weeks.
-- Quite a lot of required reading for a course that could easily be separated into two courses; similar to ACC 201 and ACC 202
-- The book lacked demonstrating the depth of knowledge required for the type of exam questions presented.
-- The instructor sends a ‘Welcome’ message to the class that seems to be more of a scare tactic than a welcome to the class. In this message, the Teacher recommends that students with more than his class drop the others, as this class is just too demanding. I found that this was demanding but that was primarily due to the lack of good examples in the text and the poor quality of the information contained in the Saint Leo study guide. For my other classes, the study guide proved to be somewhat helpful, mirroring the text chapters and providing further guidance for the course. This study guide was not helpful.
-- The study book didn’t help out that much.
-- This course attempts to cover WAY to much ground in teh 8 week format! These concepts are extremely difficult, and must be taken much more slowly. I worked harder in this class than in any other class I''ve taken from St Leo''s in the past. All academic advisors, need to be warned that this is a very difficult course, and should be taken by itself if at all possible. This is not a course for the faint-hearted, or a busy person.
-- This has been my favorite course to date at Saint Leo.
-- This was a great course, but the workload was excessive. The emphasis should be on learning not how much homework you can cram in a weeks time. If not for the active participation, enormous amount of help, and rapid response of the professor this class would have been a disaster. instead because of the professor it turned out to be one of my favorite classes
-- TOO much information the 1st week to absorb
-- Too much material to read, understand and test on with two chapters a week. This class was tough and timecomsuming. I would rate this course heavy work load.
-- Very tough course for the online environment.
-- weakness: There was entirely too much material to cover in 8 weeks! strengths: The professor was extremely accessible & knowledgible... very supportive.
36. Please comment on your instructor's strengths and weaknesses:
-- Excellent communicator and instructor tends to let his education and expertise overwhelm and intimidate the students ONCE the class was reduced the interaction and information exchanged increased dramatically in a favorable manner
-- I am now completing my first full year of courses online and I have had some very good professors but this professor was the best. He made a very difficult subject enjoyable. Having twenty years of business experience I was looking forward to this course, but knew that it would be intensive. The Professor went beyond the call of duty in teaching this course and as stated before I have had one year of online experience to compare to. I not only enjoyed the course I am dissappointed that it is now over, that''s how enjoyable he made this class and I have never felt that way before. Saint Leo needs to do what it takes to hold on to quality such as this.
-- Mike was very helpful and supportive.
-- Mr G is the best instructor that I''ve worked with at St Leo''s so far, bar none. His knowlege of the subject matter is profound, and he has the enviable ability to communicate that knowlege to his students! His concern for his students is apparent in all his interactions. The use of muliple message boards is exemplary. You should recommend this technique to ALL instructors. There is little or no room for improvement for this instructor!
-- No weaknesses... seriously... he was so attentive to what we may have issues with and if we needed to chat at any time, he was there.
-- Not enough attention given in explaining course material and how it interacts with other financial areas.
-- Prof. Guth has been one of the best professors I have had during my St. Leo experience. He was very helpful with comments, instruction and bent over backwards to be of assistance in this class.
-- Prof. Guth is an excellent instructor. I have taken many classes with St. Leo and can say that I have not had a professor who is more concerned with student success than he is.
-- Professor gave everyone plenty of help and was always available. He added extra message boards to cover current events and off topic events as well as a weekly message board for questions and answers. We had very good chat sessions.
-- Professor Guth was probably the single most involved professor that I have thus far. He has a dedication to the students and their success that I have not seen before. He was a great help in succeeding in this course.
-- The instructor took the time to care about how well we did in this class. He is one of the best instructors I have had at Saint Leo. He did as much work as we did. He also made sure we understood all of the material every week.
-- The instructor was effective and responsive to passing on information about the chapters. My only concern was that twice I sent an email that included a couple of questions each time, however, one of the questions asked each time was an assessment of how I was doing. Each time this question was not answered. I also felt the instructor wanted students to post every night or almost every night. This is not possible for me because I am not allowed to post to the message boards from work (although I am allowed to browse)and I am spending 10 - 12 hours per day at work. This does not leave much time during the week for my family nor for getting on the Internet (which is very slow at home) to post messages, which require some deep thoughts.
-- The Instructor was exceptional, I only wish that all other online instructors were as helpful, accessible, knowledgable and friendly. HE RECEIVES AN A+ FOR INSTRUCTION. HE HAS NO WEAKNESSES.
-- The instructor was very knowledgeable, and seems to have his hands on the pulse of the class. When the class was struggling as a whole he changed the course just enough to get us to understand the subject by using other means. So far I been going to Saint Leo for two years and he has probably been the best all around teacher that I had.
-- The material is somehwat difficult but the instructor really worked hard to provide meaningful assignments and to help the students understand the material.
-- The professor responded to questions faster and was the most active on the message board than any professor I have had previously. The professor did a great job.
-- Very helpful in trying to ensure all students understood the material and received the highest possible grade. Very very helpful.
37. Please make specific comments you feel would enhance your instructor's effectiveness:
-- A better book.
-- allow him some lattitude with the class.
-- Continue the good work!
-- I have no sugguestions for this instructor.
-- Just make the course a two term course
-- None, best I have had.
-- Reduce the amount and weight given to the message board.
-- remember this is a introduction to finance not designed for the finance professional and felt that is the way course was being directed to unless you already had a background in finance your chances of succcess were limited at best. Also the allowing of some class members including a Bisk employee to monopolizes chats and discussions really hampered and restricted dialogue. It was lets see how knowledgeable this person was, and this person was however when you are working in that environment on a daily basis.
-- The study book didn’t help out that much.
38. Please comment on this site's effectiveness. Is there anything you feel would make this site better?
-- Do something about the Sunday crunch of online students, especially on the last Saturday of the session. I have been bumped out during a final. I spent five hours attempting my last final and only got to answer 34 of 50 questions. It was very frustrasting to sit and wait while you attempted to refresh and get back to the test while all the time worrying about not completing the exam after eight weeks of work. What it going to be like this next semester with 100,000 students online. I hope St. Leo can improve their on line system.
-- For this semester the site went down a few times. One time was when I was taking quiz. Luckily the teacher let me re-take it. When your get boot out like that I would like for the time to stop so when I get back in its still the same time.
-- In general, not just specific to the course... I wish my program outline was online & interactive. It''s confusing to have to register with someone online & have to be looking at an outdated copy of my outline. Many of the courses aren''t even offered online yet... not a good thing when you''re trying to get your degree ONLINE. :)
-- More message boards available to a class. This instructor had to remove boards to make room for the weekly discussion boards. A weekly discussion board was most user friendly. I have had classes where the discussion (message) board was so long you could not easily find the current topics.
-- no additional comments at this time
-- Please let us log into our classes prior to the start date!! We only have 8 weeks per term. Getting a head start on reading assignments is critical! Why can''t On-Line Chats save my settings between uses? It is very frustrating to have to make the same updates every time I participate in an on-line session. Cutting and pasting into the chat session input box is also problematic. Formating gets lost, and often, the last line pasted does not complete correctly. This should be looked into!
39. Please make any other comments you feel may be relevant:
-- course should really be broken down into 2 courses (just like accounting I and II).
-- no additional comments at this time
-- Overall, I don’t believe this class is so much more difficult than the other classes I have taken. However, the grade is based on message board participation and tests only. There were no assigned homework problems and the best guidance was that which was given by other students. Professor continually sent e-mails saying that only so many students had been posting messages to the message boards and that we should remember that this will affect our final grade. While I am sure that the instructor meant well by these messages, I felt they were an insult to my intelligence. The syllabus does state that the discussion board participation was 30 % of your grade, but the instructor rarely comments on the actual participation aside from these e-mails. By the middle of the course, I pretty much had given up on the discussion board participation part of my grade.
-- Students should be fore warned about the intense course of study and large amounts of homework associated with this class. If a student takes another class along with this one they had better plan on studying 7 days a week if they expect to make it.
-- This class was kind of hard to just do in one semester. I would divide thi class in the future in two parts
-- This course was far more difficult than I anticipated. I would say that the prerequisite of Principles of Accounting is a bare minimum for the material and level of understanding required to succeed in this course. Furthermore, the university requirements to study two chapters per week is unmanageable. The difficulty of information necessitates being able to spend one week on each chapter in order to fully understand the presentation. Students should be warned to take this class by itself!
-- This course was very difficult!! I highly recommend that all students take this course by itself. I found that I spent more than 8 hours a week just preparing for the exams.
